Griz to open 2014 season against Wyoming

The University of Montana Grizzlies will open their 2014 football season at the University of Wyoming, announced UM Athletic Director Kent Haslam. The game is Saturday, August 30, 2014, with kickoff time to be announced.

“This is a great regional match-up for our team and fans,” Haslam said. “As a border state there is a natural rivalry and reviving an old Skyline Conference contest will be a lot of fun as well.”

The teams have played 13 times and the Cowboys lead the series 13-0. The last time they played each other was in Laramie in 1997, when head coach Mick Dennehy’s Grizzlies lost 28-13 to the Cowboys. The team first played in 1951, with UW winning 34-7 in Missoula.

The Grizzlies did not face a team from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) this season, but all three of their non-league opponents in 2012 were Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) squads.

Wyoming is a member of the Mountain West Conference, which is currently comprised of Air Force, Fresno State, Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico, UNLV, and San Diego State.

Earlier this year UM announced that it will open its 2017 season on Sept. 2 in Seattle against the University of Washington Huskies.

Bobcats Aiming for National Title

Off to a undefeated start and ranked second nationally, the Montana State Bobcats have their sights set on a national championship.

“High expectations mean you’ve done something good in the past, and that’s a good thing,” Bobcats coach Ron Ash tells the Havre Daily News. “And it means you’ve got good players in the program. It doesn’t guarantee you anything, but it sure is nice and it gives us some confidence.”

Ash, the current FCS National Coach of the Year, started the season only nine wins away from becoming the MSU’s all-time winningest coach.

“The ‘Take the next step’ slogan came from our strength coach, (Alex) Wilcox,” Ash tells the Billings Gazette. “He put it in back in January and February for our offseason workouts and we just kind of kept it going. We like it because it signifies so many things.

“You can take the next step in a workout, you can take the next step in your physical development, but also the program can take the next step by going a step further in the playoffs or winning the league championship outright.

“We’re ready to go, but we also know it’s 0-0. We don’t get any points or wins from last year.”

The Bobcats have progressively improved each season. After missing the playoffs in 2009, they have gone 0-1, 1-1, and 2-1 each respective season since.

Bullock joined D.C. anti-gunners in opposing self defense gun bill

Over the objections of anti-gun Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock, legislators in 2009 passed HB 228, a new self-defense statute protecting citizens’ right of self-defense.

“The new statute squarely puts the law in the hands of the citizens, by plainly stating they have no duty to retreat if attacked in a place where they have a right to be. The law also allows armed citizens to use force or threaten the use of force when he or she reasonably believes an attack is about to occur, or to stop an attack already in progress,” Daily Paul reports.
Attorney General Steve Bullock opposed a bill allowing Montanans to defend themselves with firearms. Legislators voted against him. NRA rated Bullock C+
“Many of our members are Montana sportsmen and gun owners,” said American Tradition Partnership Montana Director Doug Lair.

“Steve Bullock tried to strip Montanans of their right to defend themselves in their homes, farms and ranches. That’s the worst way to violate property rights, by making our homes ‘safe work zones’ for violent criminals,” said Lair.
