We publish accurate, plainly written news and explainers about Montana that serve readers, not campaigns, advertisers or advocacy groups.
Sourcing and fact-checking
- We rely on primary sources wherever possible: statutes, court records, agency data, official filings and meeting records.
- Factual claims are checked against at least one authoritative source before publication, and we link to sources in each article.
- We do not invent quotes, interviews, events or sources. When we quote someone, the quote comes from a cited public statement or record, or from an interview we actually conducted and identify as such.
- We do not publish unverified allegations of wrongdoing against named individuals.
Attribution
Information from other news organizations is credited and linked. Images are original, licensed or public domain, with credit.
Analysis and labeling
News and explainers present facts and the range of documented positions. We do not publish opinion columns or endorsements.
Pen names
Some contributors write under pen names. Bylines and author pages describe each writer’s coverage area only, and we do not attach credentials, employers or photos to pen names. The publication takes editorial responsibility for every article, whatever the byline.
AI-assisted drafting
We may use AI tools to help research, outline or draft articles. Every article is reviewed, fact-checked and edited by a human editor before publication, and a person is responsible for its final content. AI tools are never used to fabricate sources, quotes, images of real events or people.
Dates and updates
Articles show their real publication date. Substantive updates are noted with the date of the update.
