Hunting is part of community life across Montana. Season dates and rules change every year, so the official regulations are the only reliable guide.

Licenses

Licenses and permits are sold through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) online, at FWP offices and through license agents. Residents need a Conservation License and, for most hunting, a base hunting license before buying species licenses. Many deer, elk and other permits are awarded through drawings with spring application deadlines.

Hunter education

Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, must complete hunter education before buying a Montana hunting license, with limited exceptions such as apprentice hunting. FWP lists classes statewide.

Seasons

Archery seasons start in early fall, and the general deer and elk rifle season usually runs about five weeks from late October to late November. Always check the current FWP regulations booklet for your hunting district.

Safety and access

Wear hunter orange where required. Get permission before entering private land, and use FWP’s Block Management program and public-land maps to find legal access.
