In many Montana towns, the public library is one of the few free indoor public spaces, and it often offers far more than most residents realize.
Common services
- Free internet and computer access, and in many places Wi-Fi hotspots to borrow
- E-books and audiobooks through the MontanaLibrary2Go consortium
- Interlibrary loan, so you can request materials from other libraries
- Children’s story times, summer reading programs and teen programs
- Help with résumés, job searches, government forms and genealogy
The state’s role
The Montana State Library in Helena supports local libraries, runs statewide digital resources, and serves Montanans who are blind or have print disabilities through the Talking Book Library. It also maintains geographic and natural-resource data.
Getting a card
Cards are usually free for residents of a library’s city or county. Bring an ID and proof of address.
